About the CfYP

Welcome to the CfYP

The North East Lincolnshire Council for Young People represents the democratic voice of young people in the community and in the UK through the UKYP.

Simply put it means that we listen to what young people in North East Lincolnshire want and take their suggestions to the people who can make a difference.  We were set up in 2000 by a group of fifteen young people who felt that they should have a say in issues concerning young people.  They set up a youth forum, but decided that ‘forum’ was the wrong word for the intentions of the group and so it changed to ‘council’ as this conveyed the active involvement that young people wanted in the community.  They also decided to change ‘youth’ to ‘young people’ as they thought that youth was used to often to headline bad news stories about young people.  Our slogan; Of Young People • By Young People • For Young People, is the perfect explanation of what we want to achieve.

One of the first issues the CfYP campaigned for was the Hot School Meals issue, and although we didn’t make a big impact on the outcome of the decision, the local authority recognised and appreciated that they should have consulted with young people as they were the people who were going to be most affected.

At the moment the CfYP are involved in a number of important projects that are currently in development. They are:

Young People’s Scrutiny Panel
School Councils’ Forum
Young People’s Inspectorate
Pulse Website Development Group
Recognition and Appreciation Policy
Young People’s Service Advisory Group
Electronic Voting for UKYP Election
Children’s Human Rights Booklet Distribution
