Brief history of St Hugh’s Community Centre and what we do!

St Hugh’s Community Centre was built in the 1960’s in association with the Church of England. It had been agreed during St Hugh’s 50 year anniversary in 1961 that a new youth centre should be built for the children and young people of the area.

The Centre under went a refurbishment with the aid of a Lottery grant in 2003.

The current paid staffs at the centre are the Centre Manager and a Caretaker. Existing activities running from St Hugh’s are Parchment Art, Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Keep Fit, Weight Issues Balance class, Karate, Tai Chi, Grimsby Majorettes, and Youth Time. The centre is also used for parties and family celebrations and Sure Start activities.

We have a gardening group and looking at developing a community garden in 2008, we have also a History group who meet monthly and are piecing together the history of the West Marsh with the intention of producing a book.

Our vision is to provide a centre where regular community activities can take place for the people of the West Marsh and Macaulay areas of Grimsby.

Our mission therefore is to: offer a diverse range of activities for people despite of their age, races, gender, disability, or religion. To work in partnership with our colleagues from other centres in Grimsby in particular the West Marsh and to develop long term strategies for joint working with the Local authority and our health colleagues.
